CMS to host call on appeals settlement offer
AHA News Now
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will host a call on Oct. 9 at 1:30 p.m. Est. to review its offer to acute care and critical access hospitals to settle certain patient status claim denials. The call presents an additional opportunity for hospital leaders to ask questions before settlement requests are due to CMS on Oct. 31 deadline. Click here for details or to register. AHA has made a tool available to members to help them compare the settlement they might expect to receive under CMS's offer with what they might recover if they choose to continue the appeals process for claims eligible for the settlement.

About the Conference
The ACMA Leadership Conference is a two-day event designed specifically for healthcare delivery system case management and transitions of care professionals in leadership positions. The conference will be held at the Orlando World Center Marriott, Nov. 19-20, 2014, in Orlando, Florida. This year's conference theme is, "2015 and Beyond: Case Management's Three-Year Plan." A faculty comprised of practice leaders and healthcare experts will present sessions on the strategies and plans case management leaders should develop and employ in order to efficiently deliver effective care and position themselves, their department and their organization for success in this changing healthcare system.

The ACMA Fundraising Committee's In Memory/Honor fundraising initiative has returned for 2014. Coinciding with National Case Management Week, this program provides case management professionals an opportunity to donate a gift in honor of, or in memory of, an individual, department, chapter or organization. This is a great opportunity to honor or remember those who have not only impacted you personally in your career in health care, but those who daily make a difference in the lives of patients and all of those they touch.

By recognizing an individual or group, their name will be listed: in ACMA's Collaborative Case Management journal, in ACMA's briefCASE e-newsletter and an email announcement during National Case Management Week and on the ACMA website.

64 ACOs earn Medicare bonuses
Quality improved broadly, and 64 of the 243 Medicare accountable care organizations saved the program enough money to earn bonuses last year, according to the CMS. Fifty-three ACOs participating in the Medicare Shared Savings Program and 11 participating in the Pioneer program saved enough money to earn bonuses. Overall, the ACOs saved Medicare $372 million. ACMA will return to Washington, D.C., Sept. 30 - Oct. 2 for its annual Advocacy on Capitol Hill event. ACMA members will meet with key lawmakers to advocate on behalf of case management and discuss the issues impacting our practice and adversely affecting patient care.

Round-the-clock telehealth program introduced at UCLA
Becker's Hospital Review
A round-the-clock telemedicine initiative was recently launched by the UCLA Health System for nonemergency medical concerns. The service is a covered benefit for members of Anthem Blue Cross and allows them to use personal devices such as tablets and cellphones to have virtual consultations with doctors through the LiveHealth Online platform. Coalition briefs Congress on need for ICD-10

The Coalition for ICD-10, whose members include the AHA, briefed congressional staff recently on their support for the Oct. 1, 2015, transition to ICD-10. Speakers included Thomas Pacek, vice president of information systems and chief information officer for Inspira Health Network in Bridgeton, New Jersey, as well as representatives from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta; Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut; the American Health Information Management Association; Healthcare Financial Management Association; BlueCross BlueShield Association; and Professional Association of Health Care Office Management.
