Longer hospital stay equals lower mortality, fewer readmissions
One extra day in the hospital cuts costs and significantly reduces the chance of the need to readmit Medicare patients within 30 days, a new study from Columbia Business School found. That extra day slashed the risk of death for patients treated for pneumonia by 22 percent. Mortality for heart attack patients was cut by 7 percent, as were readmission rates, according to an announcement detailing the findings. Overall, the number of heart attack and pneumonia patient lives saved with one more day of hospitalization versus outpatient treatment increased five- to six-fold, the school said.

For your holiday star: A gift for the person who has everything
Are you having difficulty coming up with gift ideas for that person who has everything? Recognize those who mean the most to you — your "holiday stars" — by honoring them with a donation to ACMA in their name. Clients, colleagues, family, friends, directors, staff, physician advisors, departments, chapters, hospitals/healthcare delivery systems, mentors and more — honor them all as your stars this holiday season.

By making a donation to ACMA and recognizing your holiday star(s), their name will be listed: in ACMA's Collaborative Case Management journal, in ACMA's briefCASE e-newsletter and on the ACMA website. All proceeds support ACMA's fundraising efforts, and as ACMA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, your donation is tax deductible.

Donate today and recognize your holiday star — click here.

Medicare readmissions penalties will hurt COPD patients, teaching hospitals
Lung disease experts say Medicare's new policy to penalize excessive hospital readmissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will do more harm than good — hurting a vulnerable patient population and also the hospitals that care for them. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Hospital Readmission Reduction Program has added COPD to its list of conditions subject to penalties for readmitting patients too often within 30 days of discharge.

Ebola Watch: US nurses plan protests over lack of preparedness
National Nurses United, which has repeatedly warned that nurses are unprepared to handle patients with the deadly Ebola virus, will hold protests in at least 14 states and the District of Columbia to demand tougher Ebola safety precautions in U.S. hospitals. "With the refusal of hospitals across the country to take seriously the need to establish the highest safety precautions for when an Ebola patient walks in the door, and the failure of our elected leaders in Washington to compel them to do so, America's nurses say they have to make their voices heard a little louder," NNU Executive Director RoseAnn DeMoro said.
