Active Voice: Mud Runs — Calling Attention to Injury Prevention

Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek is a professor in the Exercise Science program at University of South Florida in Tampa. Her research and teaching focus on legal liability, risk management and fitness safety. Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek served as the Legal Columnist for ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal from 2001-2010. She is the lead author of a textbook on this subject, titled Risk Management for Health/Fitness Professionals: Legal Issues and Strategies. JoAnn, in addition to being a member of ACSM, also holds membership in the Sport and Recreation Law Association (SRLA).

This commentary presents Dr. Eickhoff-Shemek’s views on the topic of an article she and her colleagues have authored and which appears in the May/June 2014 issue of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal (H&FIT).

After an excellent presentation at the 2013 SRLA annual conference that described the growth and unique types of injuries associated with Obstacle Course Mud Runs (OCMR), I contacted Dr. Anthony Abbott, legal columnist for ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal (H&FIT), and suggested this topic as a timely and important one for this journal’s audience. He agreed, and with my SRLA colleagues, we prepared a two-part article. Part 1 focuses on the rising popularity of these events, the associated injuries, and legal issues. Part 2 (to be published in the September/October 2014 issue) focuses on risk management (safety) strategies for OCMR providers and participants to help minimize the frequency and severity of injuries.

ACSM, USDA, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Join Forces to Announce Action Steps to Combat Obesity Crisis

A majority of Americans are overweight or obese, a factor in the rapid rise in common diseases like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure and more. According to a paper published in this month’s issue of the official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), energy balance is a viable public health solution to address the obesity epidemic. The paper outlines steps to incorporate energy balance principles into public health outreach in the U.S.

The paper is an outcome of the October 2012 expert panel meeting titled "Energy Balance at the Crossroads: Translating the Science into Action" hosted by ACSM, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)/Agriculture Research Service.

The paper, published in the July edition of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise® and in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics gives the following recommendations:
  • Integrate energy balance into curriculum and training for both exercise science and nutrition professionals and strengthen collaborative efforts between them
  • Develop competencies for school and physical education teachers and position them as energy balance advocates
  • Develop core standards for schools that integrate the dynamic energy balance approach
  • Work with federally-funded nutrition programs to incorporate energy balance solutions like the Cooperative Extension Service and school lunch programs
  • Develop messaging and promotional strategies about energy balance that American consumers can understand and apply to their lifestyle
  • Map out and support existing programs that emphasize energy balance

Far be it from us to judge, but ... have you exercised today? This month? This year?

If need be, we have some suggestions for health clubs, programs and trainers that can get you up and moving. You should find plenty of company. More than 10 million health-club members in 2012 were 55 or older, up from just 1.9 million in 1990, according to the Boston-based International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association.

"Baby boomers don't want to age," says Colin Milner, chief executive officer of the International Council on Active Aging in Vancouver, British Columbia. "And one of the things that gives you the best results is fitness."

To help jump-start an exercise program, here are some resources tailored to those 50 and over:

Niche clubs. There's no mistaking the target audience for health clubs with names like Nifty After Fifty ( and Welcyon Fitness After Fifty (, just two among the growing number of clubs and chains that cater specifically to this demographic. From the moment clients walk in, "we want people to say, 'These are people who look like me, there's hope for me, and I can work out and get healthy, too,' " says Welcyon co-founder Suzy Boerboom.

Study: Injection Treatment No Help for Hamstring Injuries

An expensive and unusual treatment that relies on components from a patient's own blood doesn't appear to speed recovery from hamstring muscle injuries, according to new research.

The treatment is favored by top athletes, but the study found no benefit from platelet-rich plasma injections, at least when administered in a certain way.

A physician who relies on the largely untested therapy says the new research misses the mark. But the study's lead author stands by the findings, published in the June 26 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

"We found no benefit of platelet-rich plasma injections compared to placebo injections" in terms of the time athletes needed to return to playing sports and their risk of getting injured again, said study lead author Dr. Gustaaf Reurink, a sports medicine specialist with Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Hamstrings are muscles at the back of the thigh and crucial to flexing the hip and knee, said Dr. Lewis Maharam, a sports medicine specialist in New York City.
