AFCA High School Spotlight: Ed Burke (Retired), Torrey Pines High School, Calif. AFCA Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As high school coaches, we spend many hours developing our philosophy of offense, defense and special teams play. We read books, watch videos and attend clinics in an effort to improve our knowledge and find the "difference maker" when it comes to X's and O's. But sometimes the difference maker is not a new Wing-T wrinkle or 3-3-5 blitz; sometimes the difference maker lies in the hearts of the young men you coach. More
Mo Ankney; 43 years of coaching AFCA Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Mo Ankney was born into a football family. His dad Ben, uncle Pete, and older cousin, Bob, were all high school and college football coaches. It was natural for him to also become a coach. When Ankney began as an assistant coach to Jack Harbaugh at Eaton High School in Ohio in 1964, he didn't know the adventures that were in front of him. Since then, he has coached football at three high schools, seven universities and the Warriors of Bologna, Italy. He has been a position coach, defensive coordinator and head coach. He has served as an assistant to four outstanding head coaches. He has worked with hundreds of assistants who taught him everything he knows and who are still his good friends. College football change doesn't have to be a bad thing for the Cotton Bowl. That may seem strange to say, considering the Cotton Bowl could be days away from losing an anchor conference for the second time in its nearly 75-year history. But it made it through the breakup of the Southwest Conference, whose champion came to Dallas 55 straight years, and thanks to a sparkling new home at Cowboys Stadium, the bowl is confident it will make it through this potential shakeup as well. 'Golden Rules' of offense eteamz Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Most coaches have a set of "Golden Rules" when it comes to what a "good" offense should or should not do. The fact is there is no unified list. Which is better, a ball control offense? Control the ball with the short passing game or the power running game? Is defense more crucial then offense. While it may be true that "if they don't score, they can't beat you," it is conversely true that if you don't score, you can't win either. So balance is the answer then. Let's face it - punters and punting don't "fit in" much anymore. They don't fit in with coaches, they don't fit in with owners, they don't fit in with "real players", they don't fit in with TV announcers, and they don't fit in with kids. Has this small, often overlooked aspect of the game of football become so stagnant that it's ineffective and mundane in this day and age? Punting at all levels can be game impacting and game winning. More USC's punishment sends shock waves ESPN Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
The NCAA shocked the world and the cynics who didn't believe it still had the sternness to drop the hammer on arguably the most glamorous program in college football. It shocked the USC Trojans, whose institutional behavior screamed defiance and indifference to allegations of potentially serious rules violations. It shocked Lane Kiffin, who left a great job in the best conference in America for the captain's chair of the Titanic. More |
