Smart buildings and smart cities will take center stage in 2014

Capital-intensive renewable power projects are now at a place where governments around the world are delaying their commitment to spend. In addition, the centralized structure of the electrical utility industry through which most of the renewable power will be traded is not the most appropriate and is not yet fully on board. However, there is a more appropriate direction that will take us down the path to reach our destination of a low-carbon economy in the 21st century — simply putting a lot more effort into reducing CO2 emissions in buildings and cities.

Residential PV installations rise, commercial remains flat
BUILDINGS
Photovoltaic installations in the U.S. reached 930 megawatts in Q3 2013, up 20 percent over Q2 2013 and 35 percent over Q3 2012, according to the U.S. Solar Market Insight report. This increase represents the second largest quarter in the history of the U.S. solar market and the largest quarter ever for residential PV installations. It is likely that 2013 will be the first time in more than 15 years that the U.S. installs more solar capacity than world leader Germany.

Federal facilities recognized for highly efficient CHP systems
BUILDINGS
The National Archives and Records Administration's combined heat and power, or cogeneration, system has achieved an operating efficiency of 72 percent. Conventional production of electricity and thermal energy can be less than 50 percent efficient.

3 state capitals to receive green design assistance from EPA
EDC Magazine
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced design assistance to help the capital cities of Michigan, Wisconsin and Washington develop designs for greener, healthier, more vibrant neighborhoods. The designs will provide models for the growing number of communities interested in sustainable designs that improve the environment, strengthen local economies and protect people's health.
