Measuring exterior energy efficiency

Today's tip is about the important measures facility managers should be aware of when trying to quantify the quality and energy efficiency of exterior building elements. For roofs, the two main measures are solar reflectance and infrared emittance. Solar reflectance measures a surface's ability to reflect infrared, visible and UV light. Generally, the higher the solar reflectance, the more energy efficient the roof will be.

Tracking green building energy use falls short

Energy use at green buildings is seldom tracked by its big supporters — federal, state and local government agencies, a USA Today review shows. When the District of Columbia began requiring newly constructed city buildings to be environmentally friendly, it created an oversight panel to monitor the program and to report every year on possible improvements. The building law took effect nearly six years ago. The oversight panel has written one report — in 2011.

China to boost solar power goal 67 percent as smog envelops Beijing
Bloomberg
China plans to increase its goal for solar-power installations in 2015 by 67 percent to reduce reliance on fossil fuels blamed for greenhouse gases and as smog in Beijing reached record hazardous levels this month. The world's biggest emitter of carbon-dioxide plans to raise the solar target to 35 gigawatts by 2015 from 21 gigawatts set last year, boosting demand for manufactures that suffer from slowing sales in Europe, Shi Dinghuan, the counselor of China's State Council and the president of Chinese Renewable Energy Society, said by phone.

Hundreds of solar panels to be installed on Music City Center's roof

Nashville, Tenn., Mayor Karl Dean said he continues to be very excited about how the new Music City Center is being built. "One of the special features of the building is that it is very environmentally sensitive," Dean explained. "We are on track to be a Silver LEED certified building and of course one of the most prominent features that everyone sees in the green roof."
