Concept solution to rising seas: Floating undersea skyscraper

A Canadian architectural firm has presented its solution to the apocalyptic scenario in which global warming causes a drastic rise in sea level. The Gyre project is a giant floating self-sustained habitat. Propeller, The central structure of the Gyre, is a vortex of concentric rings ranging in size from 30,000 square meters to just 600 square meters. The upper floors house public places like restaurants, gardens and shops, while lower sections are used for offices and living quarters. The hollow inner part of the vortex is used for harvesting rain water and for solar energy generation. More

First skyscraper in 20 years to open in L.A.

Los Angeles is set to reach new heights next week. Gensler, a global design firm, announced the Feb. 16 opening of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Residences Los Angeles and JW Marriott at L.A. LIVE, a 5.6 million square-foot pedestrian oriented district. The 54-story mixed-use skyscraper, which is located adjacent to the STAPLES Center and the Los Angeles Convention Center and currently pursuing LEED Gold certification, is the first high-rise to grace the downtown city area in 20 years. Sydney's ugliest building may soon be getting a new lease on life through to a plan to "reskin" the entire tower with a high-performance photovoltaic skin. Architecture firm Laboratory for Visionary Architecture (LAVA) has proposed the retrofit, and if their plan is enacted it would turn the 1960’s brutalist building into a brilliant super-efficient eco-tower. SOM unveils plans for a green geothermal district in Beijing

SOM recently unveiled plans for a new urban center in Beijing's Dawangjing District that will feature an integrated heating and cooling solution designed to reduce energy use and carbon emissions. The new development will include a central park that utilizes a geothermal heat-exchange system to help passively heat and cool all of the district’s buildings. More
