The National Insulation Association reports that mechanical insulation could result in savings of $4.8 billion a year for commercial and industrial market segments, as well as carbon dioxide reductions of 43 million metric tons per year—equal to the carbon dioxide reductions if mature trees were planted in an area the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. "When designed, applied and maintained properly, insulation is a powerful, long-lasting energy efficiency and emission reduction technology," said Michele Jones, executive vice president /CEO of the National Insulation Association. "However, insulation is often overlooked in such initiatives, despite the fact that insulation can in many cases provide an annual return on investment of greater than 100 percent." More

Computerized maintenance and return on investment seen as important for AFE CPMM certification review class registrants

Early registrants for the two recently announced AFE Certified Plant Maintenance Manager Review Classes have cited computerized maintenance and return on investment for building maintenance and operations programs as two of the most important topics in the program."Computerized maintenance is being implemented just about everywhere to reduce costs and increase efficiency," said one registrant. "And making sure you get a good return for your maintenance budget is important guys in the C-Suite want to know where every dollar is going." The CPMM is one of three certification programs from AFE and is designed to demonstrate that you have mastered, and are maintaining continuing professional expertise. Other topics include:

• Workflow planning and scheduling

Fort Benning Army Base converts landfill gas into energy with FlexEnergy Powerstations

From solar powered backpacks and generators to LED lights in submarines, the U.S. military has been implementing green technologies across the board. The latest endeavor is at Fort Benning, Georgia, where two FlexEnergy Powerstations are being installed to convert the base's landfill gas into its own electricity. The 250 killowatt powerstations will collectively produce enough energy to power nearly 500 homes. More
