Solar installations: California's 1,000-plus megawatts lead record year

The amount of new photovoltaic solar panels installed in the United States grew to 3,313 megawatts in 2012, up from 1,887 megawatts in 2011, marking 76 percent growth and another record-breaking year for the American solar industry. A year-in-review report jointly released by GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association found that more than half of the new installations, or 1,782 megawatts, came from the first wave of large, utility-scale solar power plants coming online in the desert Southwest.

A: In general, commercial facilities are built with a 50-year life cycle. Within this, there are three sub-life cycles. Then there are individual component life cycles. A savvy facility manager needs to know how to predict the facility renewal needs of each of these life cycles and generally budget for them before the end of each life cycle — with improved accuracy as the drop dead date arrives.

Obama pushes research fund, seeks common ground on energy policy
Reuters
President Barack Obama tried to move past partisan fights over energy policy with a modest proposal to fund research into cars that run on anything but gasoline. Obama toured the Argonne National Laboratory outside of Chicago, known for its research into advanced batteries used in electric cars, then delivered a speech highlighting the need to find more ways to wean vehicles off oil.
