Solar power bridges gap between Middle East, Europe
Climate News Network via EarthTechling
The world's largest concentrated solar power plant opened in March in the middle of Abu Dhabi's western region, amid the country's giant oil fields. The $600 million plant's hundreds of mirrors direct sunlight towards pipes full of oil to drive steam turbines that in turn provide enough electricity for thousands of homes. In a country whose vast wealth is generated by oil, adopting a new technology that produces only 100 megawatts of power — about one-tenth the amount of a large coal-fired plant — may seem a mere token, but it is part of a much larger industrial strategy for the region.

Can energy dashboards make your facility fly?
BUILDINGS
Chris Olson writes, "Recently, I watched a presentation on energy dashboards at a Honeywell Building Control Systems conference. These dashboards can display a range of functions and building information in a way that evokes the idea of driving or flying a building. Video game creators are lending their expertise to the design of the displays so that users are not overwhelmed or distracted by the information. Instead they see only the actionable data for their needs."

The CBECS and why it's important
EDC Magazine
April marks an important milestone for the high-performance building community. After years of setbacks and complications stemming from financial strife, the U.S. Department of Energy's 2012 Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey will begin fielding data. Considering the building design and construction industry's current focus on performance data, not to mention the leaps and bounds made by green building standards over the past decade, the CBECS could not have come at a better time.

Reuters

The world's biggest supplier of industrial motors and power grids said it had agreed to pay $6.35 per share in cash for Power-One, the second-largest maker of solar inverters that allow solar power to be fed into grids.

VentureBeat
Chances are you've heard that we're using a lot of energy every day and need to, you know, slow our roll. We've done an excellent job figuring out how to use fossil fuels, but what about our other natural resources? Wind, some say, is our next best thing.
