DOE invests $8 million in next-generation HVAC systems
Energy Manager Today
The U.S. Department of Energy is investing $8 million to advance research and development of next-generation HVAC technologies in the areas of advanced vapor compression technology and nonvapor compression technology. Advanced vapor compression systems projects will use highly efficient versions of the technologies that currently drive HVAC systems but with refrigerants that have a minimal effect on the environment.

How Facebook is helping emergency responders in Nepal
TIME
A massive earthquake struck Nepal, parts of India and Mount Everest recently, claiming at least 4,000 lives and injuring thousands more. As heartbreaking as the devastation is, it reminds us that social media has the potential to help in big ways. Facebook activated a feature called Safety Check to help people track their friends and family in the region. Take the example of a fire in an apartment building. A local fire department could set up a special page that users can connect to.

Engineering News-Record
Congress has approved a narrowly focused measure that aims to encourage — but not require — commercial buildings owners and tenants to improve their facilities' energy efficiency. Installing new high-efficiency water heaters
Plumbing & Mechanical
The new National Appliance Energy Conservation Act requirements for water heaters take effect April 16. These energy-efficiency requirements will affect you — and your clients — because as efficiency increases, so does the size of the water heater. "The new water heater regulations will have a significant effect on homeowners, particularly those with an aging or failing unit that will need to be replaced in the near future," explains Bridget Kidd, director of residential and commercial programs for the Propane Education & Research Council.

Earthquakes pose increasing risk to buildings, occupants
BUILDINGS
Earthquakes continue to be a threat to economic productivity and overall safety, according to new research that shows that over 143 million Americans will experience potentially dangerous seismic activity during their lifetimes. The number is a dramatic increase from 1994, when FEMA estimated that only around 75 million Americans were at risk from seismic activity. The Seismological Society of America report also shows that around 28 million people will experience shaking strong enough to cause significant damage to critical infrastructure such as hospitals and schools.

Software to analyze building life cycle
BUILDINGS
While many different types of software exist to measure energy consumption in facilities, a new program has been created that can analyze the entire life cycle of a building, including aspects such as energy use, materials and social repercussions. The cloud-based software named NECADA can also be used to run scenario simulations that can identify the possible effects that climate change will have on buildings, including measuring how much carbon dioxide the given facility will emit.

Don't underestimate the importance of benchmarking
Facilitiesnet.com
The Department of Energy reports that buildings that benchmark energy use save an average of 2.4 percent over buildings that don't benchmark. That means that just knowing your energy use and how it compares to similar buildings is in and of itself an energy-saving strategy. It's one of those odd statistics that simultaneously makes sense, but also may sound too good to be true.
