Lighting trends: Lighting decisions
Today's Facility Manager
The cost of energy is not disappearing from the news, and today's facility managers (fms) are on the front line of this important issue. "In these economically uncertain times, what we can be certain of is energy savings provided by today's energy efficient technologies. Regardless of fiscal cliffs and sequesters, reducing energy costs and improving lighting quality — which creates high occupancy rates and increases worker productivity — will be the way the U.S. economy gets growing again and how American businesses will stay globally competitive," advises Keith T.S. Ward, president & CEO of Luminus Devices Inc., a Billerica, Mass.-based maker of LED lighting.

Minnesota solar power gets new boost from lawmakers
Minnesota Public Radio
Minnesota could soon take another step ahead in the transition to renewable energy. Minnesota utilities already are replacing coal-fired power plants with windmills, prompted by the state's landmark 2007 Next Generation Energy Act. Partly as a result, the state has a healthy wind power industry. To continue the renewable energy effort, state legislators have introduced bills in the House and Senate that would increase the use of solar systems in homes and businesses.

Financial Times
The world faces an energy crisis. That view is commonplace. Total demand for energy is expected to grow by as much as a third over the next 25 years. Harder questions are what to do about this, and who can make money from it. So far, the answer is obvious: There has been an expansion in supply, largely through the exploitation of shale gas in the U.S.

Today's Facility Manager
Verizon has announced it will invest $100 million in a solar and fuel cell energy project that will help power 19 of its facilities in seven states across the country. When completed next year, the project will enable Verizon to generate more than 70 million kilowatt hours of its own green energy annually while eliminating more than 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide — enough to offset the annual CO2 emissions from more than one million gallons of gas.
