Energy-efficiency bill clears Senate panel
The Hill
A bill viewed as a bellwether of the Senate's appetite for passing energy-efficiency legislation breezed through the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The bill (S. 761), co-sponsored by Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., and Rob Portman, R-Ohio, passed the committee by a 19-3 vote. Republican Sens. Mike Lee (Utah), Tim Scott (S.C.) and Jeff Flake (Ariz.) opposed the measure. But even the bipartisan endorsement for the bill might not be enough to get it to the floor.

Overcoming condition-monitoring roadblocks with a remote diagnostics approach
By John Trulli
Industries continually are looking for ways to maximize the return on their maintenance investment. It long has been accepted that condition monitoring provides the best opportunity for early defect detection and root-cause identification. The difficulty many organizations face during the development and implementation stage is the correct resources and specialized skill sets are not available on-site. Many organizations also find it cost-prohibitive to build this capability on their own and from the ground up.

Just the facts: LED lighting
EDC Magazine
It's that classic light-bulb moment, reinvented. LED (light emitting diode) bulbs exploded onto the scene in the last decade, promising an energy-efficient alternative to incandescent bulbs, which monopolized the lighting industry for more than 130 years. Major improvements to LED color and performance in the last few years launched LEDs over compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in the green-building movement.

Solar cells fresh from the microwave oven
BUILDINGS
An old microwave oven headed for the dumpster may lead to significant developments on the solar energy front. Sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction. University of Utah metallurgists used an old microwave oven to produce a nanocrystal semiconductor rapidly using cheap, abundant and less toxic metals than other semiconductors. They hope it will be used for more efficient photovoltaic solar cells and LED lights, biological sensors and systems to convert waste heat to electricity.
