Potential changes to green building standards rile chemical, vinyl trade groups
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Twenty trade groups representing the plastics, vinyl and chemical industries are lobbying to stop the General Services Administration from adopting proposed new standards for green building construction, saying the changes could eliminate the use of hundreds of their products in construction projects. The new standards — proposed by the U.S. Green Building Council, which sets the rating system for green construction known as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) — include a "chemical avoidance" provision that industry groups said will discourage builders from using materials that contain certain chemicals. Strategic versus project-based approach to sustainability
Environmental Leader    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There are two "standard" ways to implement a sustainability program. Organizations are inclined to either establish a sustainability team or task a certain department to carry the weight. More often than not, the approach is hybrid. The problem arises when there is a lack of balance between the two, or worse when one or the other is chosen exclusively. Which is the better approach: teams committed to strategic planning, or operations departments tasked to work in a silo to implement individual projects to show return on investment? More

Let industrial engineering be your guide on the road to food-service design efficiency
Foodservice Equipment & Supply    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Juan Martinez writes, "It seems today that lots of restaurant chains continue to roll out updated prototype units or refresh their existing facilities — all in the name of being more efficient. Unfortunately, the real motivating factor behind many of these changes is to reduce costs or make only superficial updates that increase the brand's appeal. Unfortunately, too, these efforts can miss the boat on the real benefits of driving efficiency and can result in unintended and often negative consequences. In pursuit of driving efficiency, food-service designers and operators should make the principles of industrial engineering their guide." More
