The impact of climate on high-performance facades

When the common man imagines a building, he likely pictures a four-sided brick box. But the energy-minded owner and architect have to think outside that construction. To maximize the effectiveness of the facade, it is likely that no side of it will look the same. Different climate zones require different design strategies, and those strategies entail taking a unique approach to the building's orientation. Special treatment should be given to each aspect of the system.

Germany tops in global energy efficiency rankings

Germany comes in first in a new energy efficiency ranking of the world's major economies, followed by Italy, the European Union as a whole, China and France, according to the 2014 International Energy Efficiency Scorecard published by American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. New to the rankings this year are four nations: India, Mexico, South Korea and Spain.

Near the mark: Zero in on energy neutrality
BUILDINGS
If your building isn't net zero, you can still be an energy hero. Drawing near can be just as good. Targeting "near zero" instead — which the New Buildings Institute defines as an energy use index of 16-20 kBTU per square foot per year or less — still brings staggering savings and green gains, even if true zero status isn't in the cards right now.

HVAC duct systems are designed to distribute air evenly throughout a facility. In similar fashion, they can serve as a giant waveguide to distribute radio frequency signals and enable a wireless distributed antenna system.
