Lights out for some efficiency incentives
Boulder County Business Report    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Rebates from the EnergySmart program for commercial property owners to upgrade their lighting or HVAC systems are ending because the funds have run out, according to the program's administrators. EnergySmart is an energy-efficiency program jointly run by Boulder County and the cities of Boulder and Longmont. It offers rebates and advisory services to commercial property owners, businesses and homeowners. The program has issued $1.2 million in rebates since it launched in November 2010, according to data provided by EnergySmart. More than 500 businesses have received rebates, which were issued for more than 730 projects. More

Solar power in Germany increases 40 percent
PR Newswire via The Sacramento Bee    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Solar power accounted for 10 percent of Germany's total electricity production in May, an increase of 40 percent from the previous year, as reported by the Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry. The significant jump stemmed from heightened capacity complemented by sunny days. This surge in green power generation reveals that the nation is well on its way to expanding the proportion of renewables in the energy mix. More

Wind, solar subsidy in Massachusetts set for review
The Boston Globe    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The array of solar panels recently installed on Ian Bowles's slate roof in Jamaica Plain, Mass., should pay off for him in less than a decade, but the green power the state’s former top environmental official generates may cost other utility customers for many more years. Bowles and the increasing number of homeowners, businesses, and municipalities connecting solar panels and wind turbines to the region's power grid receive a little-known subsidy, and the cost is being borne by other utility customers, who soon may pay anywhere from a dime to as much as $100 more on their monthly electricity bills. China stepping up in solar power deployment
Earth Techling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
China, it appears, might be ready to step up and do its part in deploying more of the vast solar photovoltaic capacity it is producing. Will it be enough to make everything OK in the beleaguered solar manufacturing sector? No, but it sure won't hurt. Earlier this month, China's renewable energy division put out word that the country would boost its target for solar energy installation to 21 gigawatts in the current five-year plan, which runs through 2015. PRWeb via San Francisco Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Proper air conditioning installation procedures can add years of life to new equipment and systems as well as to help save energy and money. A poorly installed or selected system can cause many problems for the end user. In a constant effort to protect the global environment, the United States Environmental Protection Agency sometimes sets the focus on home and business air conditioning methods. Greater energy efficiency marks the primary purpose behind EPA studies, yet the accumulated information often provides extended guidelines for quality installation of HVAC equipment. More

Green Globes: How does it stack up against LEED?
Green-Buildings.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Vineela Kasi Reddy writes, "Both Green Globes and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating systems were significantly based on the Building Research Environmental Assessment Method. LEED was developed by the USGBC in 1998 and Green Globes was developed by the Green Building Initiative by the Green Building Initiative in 2005. The concepts of both rating systems are more similar than they are different. However, because of the way the concepts are applied for these systems, the sustainable quotient of a building can turn out to be quite different under the two rating systems." More
