How building commissioning relates to total cost of ownership

As facilities professionals, we are often asked to work on projects and tasks that go beyond the day-to-day operation of our facilities. The types of projects and tasks I'm talking about include capital planning, construction project management, and long-term master and capital planning. Often times we enter this process with precise institutional knowledge, along with our intuition regarding particular items or projects that make sense to pursue in the short term versus long term.

US Green Building Council, American Chemistry Council to work together to advance LEED
EDC Magazine
The U.S. Green Building Council and the American Chemistry Council announced a new initiative designed to ensure the use of sustainable and environmentally protective products in buildings by applying technical and science-based approaches to the LEED green building program. This new initiative acknowledges USGBC's success in leading the transformation of the built environment and sets up a pathway to take advantage of the materials science expertise of ACC and its members.

Germany's expensive gamble on renewable energy

In a sandy marsh on the outskirts of this medieval hamlet, Germany's next autobahn will soon take shape. The Stromautobahn, as locals call it, won't carry Audis and BMWs, but high-voltage electricity over hundreds of miles of aluminum and steel cables stretching from the North Sea to Germany's industrial corridor in the south. The project is the linchpin of Germany's Energiewende, or energy revolution, a mammoth, trillion-euro plan to wean the country off nuclear and fossil fuels by midcentury and the top domestic priority of Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Demand response keeps energy use low at Chicago high-rise

Growing need for green renovation experts

Market analysis, including Harvard University's Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity, for the housing industry shows that 2014 is a robust year for the home renovation sector. The rising interest in home renovations is closely linked to the rise in home sales, where these renos are adding value by increasing home equity. According to the National Association of Home Builders, the industry is showing the highest reading since 2004 and is therefore poised for a positive future.

US launches smart cities effort
EE Times via UBM's Future Cities
The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology is putting out a call to deploy the Internet of Things in smart cities applications around the U.S., Europe and Asia. ARM Holdings, Cisco Systems, Extreme Networks, IBM, Intel, Juniper Networks and Qualcomm have already signed up to participate in what amounts to a second round of the Smart America program.

Industry groups streamline green building tool development
Environmental Leader
ASHRAE, the International Code Council, the American Institute of Architects, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and the U.S. Green Building Council have signed a memorandum to collaborate on the development of Standard 189.1, the International Green Construction Code and the LEED green building program. The cooperation aims to create a comprehensive framework for jurisdictions looking to implement and adopt green building regulations and codes and/or provide incentives for voluntary leadership programs such as LEED.
