How to prepare a business case for your facilities initiative

As facilities engineers and managers, are we expected to be experts in finance? Should we understand as much as our financial officer or chief executive? We know a lot about how to operate a plant, build something, repair equipment, contract for services and the plethora of work and detail that accompanies our job. The question is, when dealing with our finance office, board or senior decision-makers, can we make a "business case" for a specific initiative? Can we speak their language? A well-written business case can help us move a project or initiative to "Yes, approved."

The IRS is giving away $13B a year in wind energy subsidies

The main federal handout for the wind energy industry has grown considerably despite the fact that it expired at the end of 2013. Over the past two years, IRS administrators have relaxed the eligibility requirements to make it easier for in-progress wind farm projects to qualify for government subsidies. The IRS has done so repeatedly and quietly, often without action from Congress.

Hillary Clinton: US should lead on clean energy

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton recently called for the U.S. to become what she called the world's clean energy superpower. In remarks at the annual National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas, Clinton credited northern Nevada's selection for a $5 billion Tesla automobile battery plant to work in recent years for the state to become a leader in solar, wind and geothermal energy projects.

New York unveils solar power program for schools

New York recently announced the rollout of K-Solar, a landmark program under the $1 billion NY-Sun Initiative, to help public school districts throughout the state lower energy costs. The program will provide schools with the tools, technical expertise and access to financing to make solar an affordable option for schools. A total of 40 school districts have registered to participate in the program, representing nearly 200 schools in communities across the state.
