Green building sparks battle for the built environment
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The explosive growth in green buildings over the past decade is flattening the built environment. Until recently, building automation, lighting controls, fire safety and other base building systems were designed and deployed to support a single building service and operated independently on proprietary network and cables. Green building's emphasis on integrated design and whole-building performance has accelerated the convergence of these silos into a single platform, transforming a fragmented, vertical value chain into an integrated, horizontal value chain. Ryan backs Romney on ending wind energy tax credit
CBS News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan has backed nominee Mitt Romney's opposition to extending a wind energy tax credit that is sacrosanct to Iowa voters, a position that could cost the Republican ticket support in this battleground state. "We think these tax credits are important to get industries up and running, but we don't think they should continue on indefinitely. What we think would be more helpful for all renewable energies is to lower tax rates on businesses," Ryan told Des Moines television station KCCI when asked whether he agreed with Romney that the credit should be allowed to expire at the end of the year. Richard Morrison: Tax credit necessary for wind energy
The Plain Dealer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Congress currently is considering a question of critical importance to the U.S. wind energy industry, which has grown rapidly over the past decade and is a remarkable success story for American business and innovation. That question is whether to extend the federal wind energy production tax credit, currently scheduled to expire on Dec. 31. With the production tax credit in place since 2005, the expansion of wind energy manufacturing in America has been dramatic. More

Scotland plans world's largest offshore wind farm
SmartPlanet    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A Spanish-Portuguese-Chinese company has submitted plans for an offshore wind farm in northern Scotland that would be the world's largest. The £4.5 billion ($7.2 billion) 115-square mile facility would have 339 turbines with a generating capacity of 1.5 gigawatts — about the same as a large nuclear power station, and enough to power at least 800,000 homes, or about 40 percent of the country's households, The Guardian reports. A pale green tinge for US presidential campaign
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When it comes to the environment, the presidential contest has offered sharply contrasting images: Barack Obama posing beside an Iowa wind turbine and Mitt Romney standing in front of an Ohio coal mine. But in their rhetoric, both candidates have focused on a similar theme — sustainable development, the notion that the private sector can work with government to protect the environment while boosting the economy and creating jobs.
