Multifacility company finds a way to feed its energy management dashboard

When Cox Enterprises decided it needed better visibility on energy consumption and pricing for its more than 30,000 separate accounts across 190 utility providers in the United States, it started with spreadsheets and collecting data from its operations and accounting employees. Cox was able to build a database of utility accounts, "but we still had errors, and it was very easy to get behind," says Robert Fairey, Cox director of energy procurement. To solve the problem, Cox sought utility analysis software and services. More

Siemens to cut wind, solar power jobs

Siemens will cut jobs at its wind and solar power units as well as in its new Infrastructures and Cities business as part of a drive to cut costs in a weakening economy, a German magazine said. The bulk of job cuts at Siemens would likely be in management and administrative functions, Manager Magazin reported, citing no sources. A spokesman for Siemens said an outline of planned savings would be presented to management in early October and would be made public when the industrial conglomerate publishes its annual results on Nov. 8. Automation of largest solar thermal farm in the US

Platinum Building Automation has completed the automation of a solar thermal farm at Prestage Foods, a 260,000-square-foot turkey processing facility based in St. Pauls, N.C. The facility uses the sun to heat water for Prestage Farms' processes. It is by far the country's largest solar thermal farm at four times the size of the second largest. The solar thermal farm was designed, implemented and is owned by FLS Energy out of Asheville, N.C. More

California bests Obama administration's Better Buildings Challenge

Calhoun Community College President Marilyn Beck welcomed a small crowd of perhaps 100 who turned out for the opening of the Alabama Center of Excellence in Clean Energy Technology, telling them the new facility would serve a key role in putting Alabama on the map in the growing renewable energy field. Beck said the renovated more than 30-year-old facility will serve as a state and national model for clean and renewable energy. A $3.47 million Department of Labor grant funded its renovation to Leadership in Energy Efficient Design Platinum standards, the highest energy-efficiency designation awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council. 1st energy benchmarking data for private buildings released for New York City

Marking the beginning of a new era of transparency around energy use in buildings, New York City has publicly posted 2011 energy benchmarking results for 2,065 large commercial properties, which together cover more than 530 million square feet. This is the first time that any U.S. city, state or county has disclosed private-sector building energy data from a mandatory benchmarking policy. More
