EDC Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
On the day that California launches its cap and trade program, a new poll of voters in California, Oregon and Washington shows strong support for maintaining and expanding efforts across the region to account for the costs of climate pollution and invest in clean energy sources by ensuring polluters pay when they contribute to climate change. The findings demonstrate that even in a tough economy, voters in the region prioritize efforts to hasten the transition toward cleaner energy and tackle climate change while growing the economy. Green building to surge amid new LEDs and smart windows
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As new LED light bulbs and smart windows debut, new surveys say the lure of lower utility bills is prompting a boom in green building despite a weak global economy. Half, or 51 percent, of companies say most of their construction projects (at least 60 percent) will be certified as green by 2015, up from 28 percent in 2012 and 13 percent in 2009, according to a study that finds saving money — not the planet — is their primary motive. The Associated Press via ABC News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The fate of a tax credit that advocates say is needed to maintain tens of thousands of wind energy jobs will be decided during high-stakes, last-minute negotiations between President Barack Obama and House Republicans over fiscal issues, officials said. The wind energy production tax credit is due to expire at the end of the year. Its extension stalled in Congress this summer amid fierce opposition from some conservative House Republicans. The last chance to extend the measure is in the budget deal that will be cut between Obama and Republicans in the lame duck session of Congress. More

EDC Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a design world interested in sustainable solutions and increasingly driven by government policy and rating systems such as LEED, green roofs offer value by providing storm-water retention, mitigation of urban heat island effect, and thermal and sound insulation. With their greater aesthetics, they can be one of the more inviting features that communicate environmental concerns. More

What does a facility manager manage?
BUILDINGS    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The question is paradoxical in nature, because although the answer is simple and finite in one regard — i.e., "the facility" — it is actually vast and seemingly endless. As budgets continue to tighten, and with increasing regulations dictating decisions, it is helpful to analyze the wide-reaching responsibilities of facilities management teams. More
