The best places to put solar and wind power — it's not where you think
The Washington Post
From July 15: At first glance, it might seem obvious where the United States should focus on building more renewable energy. Stick the solar panels in sunny Arizona and hoist up the wind turbines on the gusty Great Plains, right? Not necessarily.

Graphene: The latest fashionable material
By Adolfo Benedito
From Aug. 6: Graphene is that magic word everyone is talking about. This popular, highly praised material is expected to give rise to revolutionary and astonishing applications. Its commercial implementation, for those working with the material, is going to take place in record time in comparison to any other material belonging to the so-called historical materials. Without a doubt, it is something revolutionary. But, as always, we must not forget that behind the impressive facade we can find doubts, questions and gray areas. As proven by history: pie-in-the-sky dreams never come true.

Cold fusion reactor independently verified, has 10,000 times the energy density of gas
ExtremeTech
From May 21: Against all probability, a device that purports to use cold fusion to generate vast amounts of power has been verified by a panel of independent scientists. The research paper, which hasn't yet undergone peer review, seems to confirm both the existence of cold fusion, and its potency: The cold fusion device being tested has roughly 10,000 times the energy density and 1,000 times the power density of gasoline.

Solar panels: Not just big rectangles on the roof anymore
Gizmodo

FacilityManagement.com
From Jan. 1: Faced with often-changing enrollments and always-limited public funds, our public schools are challenged to find efficient ways to renovate old buildings and upgrade out of date systems. As energy costs continue to climb, it is increasingly critical to employ new and more efficient technologies that revitalize and extend the life of our existing building stock. One emerging technology that holds great promise as an energy efficient alternative to standard air conditioning is the chilled beam.

How much is your lighting retrofit worth?
BUILDINGS
From Feb. 22: A perfect storm of lighting issues led to a 16-floor retrofit for Ohio's largest and oldest health insurer. The 1,000-plus employees of Medical Mutual of Ohio, which maintains its corporate headquarters in the Rose Building — a downtown Cleveland landmark — were tired of the dated appearance created by the existing three-lamp T12 lighting. At the same time, Don Green, MMO's director of building and general services, had been eyeing the phase-out of T12 lamps since that news was announced in 2010. It was time for a change.
