Manufacturing in US expanded at faster pace last month Bloomberg Share     U.S. manufacturing accelerated in February to the fastest pace since May 2004, a sign that factories are ramping up production to meet demand. The Institute for Supply Management's factory index increased to 61.4 from 60.8 in January, the Tempe, Ariz.-based group said today. Readings greater than 50 signal growth. In Europe, manufacturing expanded at the fastest pace in more than 10 years, while the rate of growth at factories in China was the slowest in six months. More

The rotors deployed at the turbines rotate 12 to 16 rotations per minute and the generator that is connected to the rotor through a gearbox works at a variable speed matching the received wind speed. To overcome the problem of varying power, the alternating current from the generators are transformed into direct current utilizing giant rectifiers. Such transformed direct current is again changed back to alternating current to match the frequency of the grid. The dual conversion results in nearly 5% of energy loss. More

Ford Motor Company and Sollers OJSC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding under which the parties intend to launch a new 50:50-owned joint venture called Ford Sollers for the production and distribution of Ford vehicles in Russia. Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia Inc. will increase production of six-speed automatic transmissions at its engine and drivetrain manufacturing plant in Buffalo, W. Va. The $64 million project will increase the operation's output to nearly 400,000 transmissions annually. Details of the expansion program were not released. he U.S. patent system hasn't changed much since 1952 when Sony was coming out with its first pocket-size transistor radio, and bar codes and Mr. Potato Head were among the inventions patented. Now, after years of trying, Congress may be about to do something about that. The Senate is taking up the Patent Reform Act, which would significantly overhaul a 1952 law and, supporters say, bring the patent system in line with 21st century technology of biogenetics and artificial intelligence.
