LVMH net income advances 53% as sales of fashion, leather goods accelerate

LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, the world's largest maker of luxury goods, reported first-half profit that beat analysts' estimates as sales of fashion and leather goods accelerated in the second quarter. Net income rose 53 percent to 1.05 billion euros ($1.36 billion), the Paris-based company said July 27 in a statement after the market closed. The average estimate of 10 analysts compiled by Bloomberg was 956.2 million euros. Second-quarter sales advanced 22 percent to 4.63 billion euros. Demand for luxury goods is returning as Chinese shoppers buy more high-end clothing and accessories, and U.S. and European retailers replenish inventories after the recession. More

Sotheby's is holding an event in the latter category this fall when the world can bid on 20 pieces from the Duchess of Windsor's haute couture jewelry collection. The Duchess, formerly American socialite Wallace Simpson, was the woman behind King Edward the VIII abdicating the British throne back in 1936, creating a royal scandal so huge Fergie's cornucopia of connundrums looks like chump change. Tiffany & Co., our favorite place to have breakfast, has unveiled their holiday collection for 2010. The launch was a champagne and mini cupcake-fueled affair, and jewels sparkled at every turn, lit by the many flashbulbs and Blackberrys in constant use by the media attendees. It was Christmas (or your holiday of choice) in July at its finest. The collection, undeniably Tiffanian, was full of geometric florals and art deco-inspired pieces, many of them looking like they could have come straight from the 1920s or 1930s. More

Gemfields emerald auction nets almost $8 million

Gemfields reported that a rough emerald auction this month realized sales of $7.5 million. Per carat prices improved 83 percent from the November auction, the mining company found. With emerald auctions now under its belt since July 2009, Gemfields has sold $26.2 million worth the gemstones. More

China yet to file charges against detained Indian diamond traders

More than six months after their arrest, Chinese authorities say they need more time to investigate the alleged diamond smuggling ring. Recently, a court extended the arrest of 21 Indian diamond traders by two months at the request of prosecutors. Authorities missed a July 12 deadline to file charges. The 21 Mumbai and Surat diamond traders were arrested in Shenzhen in January on alleged charges of smuggling diamonds worth $7.3 million into China from Hong Kong. More

Former first teen Chelsea Clinton tied the knot July 31 with longtime beau Marc Mezvinsky in a gorgeous sunset ceremony attended by family, friends and a sprinkling of Hollywood and Washington glitter. The bride and her bridesmaids all wore Vera Wang, while Hillary Rodham Clinton was decked out in a fuchsia gown by Oscar de la Renta, an old family friend. The groom wore a tuxedo designed by Burberry's Christopher Bailey, a friend of the couple. Bailey also provided the ties worn by the groomsmen and former President Bill Clinton. More

Jewelry company plans new shopping channel

A new home shopping network is set to launch this fall. National Jeweler reports that jewelry design and development agency Zalemark Holding Co. has picked up the remaining assets of bankrupt multimedia retailer Gems TV. The company expects to close on the purchase soon and on Sept. 1 wants to launch LuxTV, which will sell mainly Zalemark brands including Demeter, Steven Zale Beverly Hills, B. Smith and Paris Blues as well as other jewelry lines on air and over the Internet. Prices will start around $79. More
