Interpol hunts bold Pink Panthers gem gang

Frustrated Interpol investigators are coming up empty in their frantic bid to shut down the "Pink Panther" gem gang, responsible for the most brazen jewel heists in history, from nervy ripoffs of super luxe Paris gem stores to cool grabs in Monte Carlo. "They are very well organized and they know exactly what they are after," one official tells the Guardian. The gang originated in the former Yugoslavia and now includes heisters from throughout the Balkans, including men once active in various strong-armed governments. Police believe the gang has some 150 members and has been operating since the 1990s. More

Gem Diamonds recovers 196-carat diamond from Letšeng

Gem Diamonds has recovered a 196-carat white diamond from the Letšeng mine in Lesotho. The company said it expects the diamond to produce top color and top clarity polished diamonds and should therefore achieve a substantial price per carat for the stone. "Letšeng continues to live up to its reputation as a unique producer of exceptional diamonds and the recovery of this remarkable 196-carat white diamond reinforces its position as one of the great mines in the diamond industry," said Clifford Elphick, chief executive of Gem Diamonds.
