Tourmaline: Fashion's Tour de Force

From pretty in pink to gorgeous in green, suddenly everyone's "talkin' tourmaline!" This awesome gem — which, along with opal, happens to be one of October's birthstones — comes in a spectrum of hues, but its tourmaline's pinks and greens that are in the fashion spotlight, particularly the pastels. As for the pastel pinks, some call them blush, while a few describe their color as cake frost. With the greens, mint or sea foam is what your jeweler probably will call them. Either way, they are soothing, calming shades of tourmaline, which, perhaps not ironically, speak to tourmaline's many legends that refer to it as a stone that often reduces stress, anxiety and confusion. As a professional image consultant (I have earned my CIP designation from AICI, the Association of Image Consultants International), I often assist individuals by determining their best colors, including what we call in the business their "best reds." One's best reds may well include hues that one might not automatically think of as "red" at all. Depending upon one's personal coloring, one's most flattering shades of red might include anything from a bright "lipstick red" (typically a cool blue-red) to a warmer orange-red or coral, and might vary in intensity from palest pink to darkest burgundy. Yellow or pink flowers? The green or blue sweater? From cars to furniture to iPods, we make decisions about color all the time. Now, scientists are starting to figure out why we like the hues we do. It is our experiences that determine which colors we prefer, suggests a new study, which was the first to experimentally test the long-suspected idea that people like the colors of the things they like. The findings may help explain why blue is pleasing to people everywhere, why Japanese women tend to like light colors, and why dark yellow is generally unappealing, among other trends. More
