The American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) is preparing to add some color to the red carpet in 2011 with the continuation of its successful AGTA Collection program at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Academy Awards. The AGTA Collection is a selection of colored gemstone and pearl jewelry from AGTA members that is presented in a pre-show styling suite for celebrities and their stylists to choose to wear to the event. GIA lab alert identifies surge in HPHT-treated submissions

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Laboratory recently reported that a significant number of large high pressure/high temperature (HPHT) treated color diamonds were submitted for grading. Submissions have ranged from 3-carat to nearly 20-carat stones and the vast majority of these diamonds were submitted without full disclosure. The color grades ranged from "D" to "J", but most were "G" or better combined with high clarities. More

Platinum Guild International welcomes FTC guidance

The Platinum Guild International-USA welcomes the Federal Trade Commission's publication of final amendments to the Commission’s Jewelry Guides for the marketing of platinum jewelry. In its final amendments, the FTC requires marketers of platinum/base metal alloys to clearly disclose the content of these products and explicitly prohibits the use of abbreviations in such disclosures. The FTC also recognizes that platinum/base metal alloys may not contain the same characteristics as traditional platinum products with respect to their durability, luster, density, scratch resistance, tarnish resistance, hypoallergenicity, ability to be resized or repaired, retention of precious metal over time, and other material attributes and properties.
