Each Memorial Day, time is taken to remember those who have given their lives for our country. At memorial services across the nation, honor guards from various military branches will ceremoniously provide funeral honors for fallen soldiers. These volunteers will bring dignity, respect and reverence to those they attend. Considering many traditions in nursing are closely tied to military traditions, it is of no surprise that the concept of a nurses honor guard has grown in interest.

California falls significantly short of a new recommendation by an influential group of pediatricians calling for every school in the United States to have at least one nurse on site.
Fifty-seven percent of California’s public school districts, with 1.2 million students, do not employ nurses, according to research from Sacramento State University’s School of Nursing.

One option now under consideration by the Food and Drug Administration is a system of implanted rods that offer controlled release of buprenorphine — a drug already used in other forms to treat opioid addiction.

The American Nurses Association announced the 11 recipients of its 2016 National Awards, which honor nurses who have contributed to the nursing profession. Two honorees will be inducted into the ANA's Hall of Fame, and nine will receive Honorary Awards.

Recently, the American Nurses Association (ANA) asked nurses to help make their workplaces safer to enhance patient care and nurses' health and well-being. The emphasis on developing this type of work environment was reflected in the theme for the 2016 National Nurses Week, "Culture of Safety-It Starts with YOU."
At 3.4 million strong, RNs are the largest group of health care professionals. However, RNs also rank 6th among all occupations for the highest rates of musculoskeletal injuries resulting in missed work days.

Initiatives to reduce medical errors, the nation's third-leading cause of death, have made progress, according to research published in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Chartbook on Patient Safety.
Researchers analyzed medical malpractice payment reports, one of the primary mechanisms for identifying errors, and found they dropped 28 percent between 2004 and 2014. Furthermore, they noted a year-over-year downward trend every year but 2013 when it ticked up slightly.

The role of the school nurse has evolved and become increasingly important since first introduced in the United States more than a century ago, yet school district policies regarding school nurses lack uniformity and should be updated, according to a policy statement issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
The policy statement, published in the June 2016 issue of Pediatrics (published online May 23), calls for a minimum of one full-time registered nurse in every school. The policy replaces a prior version published in 2008.

More than 270 pregnant women in the United States and its territories have tested positive for the Zika virus, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among the 157 women in the U.S. with the virus, only 49 percent reported symptoms, which include rash and fever, according to the CDC. But 66 percent of the 122 residents in U.S. territories reported symptoms.

The Department of Veterans Affairs aims to expand the scope of practice of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who work for the agency in order to provide veterans with greater and timely access to care.
Under a proposed rule published in the Federal Register, the VA said it intends to expand the pool of qualified healthcare professions who are authorized to provide primary healthcare and other services to the full extent of their education and abilities without the clinical supervision of physicians.
