Retail Sales Signal Pick-Up in Growth

Sales at retailers posted their strongest gain in seven months during October, adding to signs the economy was regaining strength after hitting a soft patch in the summer. The Commerce Department said total retail sales rose a surprisingly strong 1.2 percent, nearly double market expectations, as consumers snapped up motor vehicles and building materials.  More

Google Adds Local Product Search

Google has added local availability results to its product search, the company has announced on its retail blog. In the works since March, the service lets users search for products, then filter the results based on which local shops have them in stock.  More

Expert: This Years LEDs Likely Will Not Match Last Year's

Pump Prices Creeping Up As Holiday Approaches

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, the price of gasoline is marching toward the high of the year. The national average for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline on Monday was just 3 cents shy $2.92 a gallon, the high back in May. Analysts expect more upward price creep before the long holiday weekend starts. There's no expectation of a holiday driving frenzy. Instead, gas is tracking the price of oil. Crude has risen 15 percent since Labor Day, as investors worried about a weaker U.S. currency have parked their money in commodities like oil.  More

Truck Rates, Capacity Shortages Seen As Biggest Headaches for Shippers in 2011

A shortage of truckload capacity — and the rate increases that could result from it — will be the biggest challenges facing shippers next year, according to comments heard at the National Industrial Transportation League's annual meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. When asked in an informal poll at the conference which of the major transport modes will experience the fiercest pricing pressure next year, 44 percent of the respondents said "truckload," by far the highest percentage of any of the modes.  More

'Precedent-Setting' Contract a First for Migrant Farm Workers

A collective agreement reached between a British Columbia nursery and a group of its employees is the first contract in Canada to specifically address migrant workers. The contract with Sidhu and Sons Nursery on Sylvester Road was announced by local 1518 of the United Food and Commercial Workers. It involves about 40 individuals.  More

New York Floriculture Producers Will Be Surveyed Beginning Next Month
