APMA transmitted a letter to President Obama, Vice President Biden and House and Senate leaders on Wednesday urging them to include a permanent fix for Medicare physician payments in any solution agreed upon to reduce the deficit and address the impending debt ceiling crisis.

CPME to begin major revision of continuing education standards

The Council on Podiatric Medical Education is pleased to announce that it will begin a major revision of the Standards, Requirements, and Guidelines for Approval of Continuing Education in Podiatric Medicine later this year. The current standards were adopted in 2005 following a two-year process of review and revision. Since
the last major revision, there have been significant changes in podiatric continuing education including, but not limited to, an increase in the use of technology (e.g., distance education) and the use of funds from corporate supporters.

Medical association praises court decision upholding

The West Virginia State Medical Association says it applauds the Court's "well reasoned decision" to uphold the state's cap on non-economic damages in medical liability lawsuits.
The Court, in its ruling, found that the state limit on compensatory damages for medical malpractice is constitutional.

Wound treating stem cell gel for patients with diabetic foot ulcers

A recent Phase II clinical trial of a wound healing stem cell gel found that the product promoted healing in 73 percent of patients with diabetic foot ulcers, compared to 46 percent treated with a placebo. The gel, DSC127, is an analog of a naturally occurring peptide, Angiotensin. It has been shown to increase keratinocyte proliferation, increase extracellular matrix production
and increase vascularization.
