Medical malpractice reform efforts stalled
Politico
Share

In a bid to win support for health reform from skeptical doctors back in 2009, President Barack Obama pledged action on an item near the top of their wish list — malpractice reform. And he delivered an initial step: $25 million to test alternatives to the medical liability system. That won praise from the American Medical Association, among others. But since then, tort reform on the federal level has been put on ice, a victim of both tight money and bitter politics.

Arthritis and brittle bones cause many seniors to lose mobility. More than one in five people, age 60 and older, are living with diabetes. These individuals have another potential challenge to their independence: Diabetic foot ulcers that can lead to amputations. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 60 percent of lower-limb amputations, not caused by trauma, occur in people with diabetes.

Fast, coordinated effort is key to saving limbs
San Antonio Express-News

The infection on Joseph Rivera's shin started out as a small red spot. Over-the-counter antibiotic creams didn't help, and the area got redder and larger, eventually spreading to his other shin. By the time he went to the hospital and received a diagnosis of diabetes, the infections were raw-meat red and encircled by a black crust of dead and dying skin and muscle. Doctors warned that he'd probably lose both legs.

Diabetic neuropathy — the agony of da feet
Harvard Health Publications
Share

P.J. Skerrett writes, "People tend to think of diabetes as a silent, painless condition. Don't tell that to the millions of folks with diabetes-induced tingling toes or painful feet. This problem, called diabetic neuropathy, can range from merely aggravating to disabling or even life threatening. It's something I have first-hand (or, more appropriately, first-foot) knowledge about."
