ESPN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
International swimming officials have postponed the start of 10-kilometer open water World Cup competition until an internal investigation of American Fran Crippen's death is complete, and the status of the event in the United Arab Emirates where he died is now in limbo. A news release issued by FINA outlined a new schedule in which 10K events—the Olympic distance—will begin in Santos, Brazil, on April 17 rather than Jan. 30 to give the investigative panel time to finish its work and forward its conclusions to the federation's leadership. Eating protein—before or after exercise?
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Having that protein shake right after exercising may help build muscle in both younger and older men, a study says. What's more, muscle protein increased at nearly the same rate in both young and elderly men. This suggests that, contrary to some research speculation, older age may not impair the way the body digests and absorbs protein from food, wrote study leader Luc JC van Loon of Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands. Cielo to revive sprint rivalry with Adrian
Gulf News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Brazilian Olympic gold medalist Cesar Cielo believes he has nothing to prove at next month's 10th Fina World Swimming Championships (25 meters). Sprint-star Cielo was beaten by Nathan Adrian of the USA in the 50 meters and 100 meters freestyle races in the Pan-Pacific Championships in Irvine, Calif., earlier this year. The two will go head-to-head again at the spectacular new Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Sports Complex along the Dubai Bypass Road. But rather than worrying about competing with his arch-rival in Dubai, 23-year-old Cielo was in a relaxed and positive mood ahead of the championships, which takes place from Dec. 15-19. More

Exercise often enough for Achilles injury recovery
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Most people with inflammation of the Achilles tendon, a common overuse injury, can recover with the help of exercise therapy alone, a small study suggests. A full recovery might take time, as tendons are often slow to heal, researchers say, but sticking with exercise could help people avoid more invasive treatments like drug injections into the joint or even surgery. Olaves rebuilding FAMU swimming program
Tallahassee Democrat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The stoic look on Jorge Olaves' face was a good sign that he wasn't joking as he stared at the list of records set over the past eight years by Florida A&M swimmers, then made a very bold statement. "I want to break all those records," he said emphatically. "All those records." That from a man who took over the men's and women's teams for a second time with a handful of swimmers and without a home pool. But he said he's seeing progress as his swimmers are dropping their times and he's getting overseas inquiries from potential recruits. More
