Paper diagnostic for instantaneous blood typing

Agglutinated blood transports differently onto paper than stable blood with well dispersed red cells. This difference was investigated to develop instantaneous blood typing tests using specific antibody−antigen interactions to trigger blood agglutination. Two series of experiments were performed. The first related the level of agglutination and the fluidic properties of blood on its transport in paper. Blood samples were mixed at different ratios with specific and nonspecific antibodies; a droplet of each mixture was deposited onto a filter paper strip, and the kinetics of wicking and red cell separation were measured. Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration licensed a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine, MenACWY-CRM (Menveo, Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics). MenACWY-CRM is licensed as a single dose for use among persons aged 11–55 years. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) reviewed data from prelicensure clinical trials on the safety and immunogenicity of MenACWY-CRM. This report summarizes the approved indications for MenACWY-CRM and provides guidance from ACIP for its use. The following guidance for use of MenACWY-CRM is consistent with licensed indications and ACIP recommendations for meningococcal conjugate vaccines. More

Researchers have discovered a central controller or processing unit of a superbug's weaponry. The team from the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research has revealed that a small chemical, made by the superbug Staphylococcus aureus and its drug-resistant forms, determines this disease's strength and ability to infect. The bacteria is the cause for a wide range of difficult-to-treat human infectious diseases such as pneumonia, toxic-shock syndrome and flesh-eating diseases. More

FDA approves cysview for cystoscopic detection of papillary bladder cancer

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved hexaminolevulinate HCl (Cysview; GE Healthcare, under license from Photocure ASA) for the detection of non-muscle-invasive papillary bladder cancer in patients suspected or known to have lesion(s) on the basis of prior cystoscopy. Bladder cancer, which is most likely caused by smoking, is the fourth most common type of cancer in men and eighth most common in women. The most common initial sign is red-colored urine, which calls for urine cytology and cystoscopy, usually performed under white light alone. More

Bay Area sees increase in whooping cough cases

The Bay Area is in the middle of a whooping cough outbreak, with six times as many cases so far this year as last year, and public health officials are encouraging new parents to get vaccinated and avoid large crowds to protect their infants. The entire state is seeing large increases in whooping cough, which is the familiar name for pertussis. So far five infants — all of them under 4 months old — have died in California, and all of them caught the disease from their mother or another caregiver. More

Scientists cite advances on two kinds of cancer

Using two opposite strategies, one focused and one broad, scientists say they have made progress in taming two of the most intractable types of cancer. The focused approach shrank tumors significantly in a majority of patients with advanced lung cancer marked by a specific genetic abnormality. Even though the clinical trial was small (just 82 people, with no control group), the results were considered so striking for such sick patients that the study will be featured at the main session of the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Scientists are a step closer to unraveling one of the greatest mysteries of the biological world: how stem cells morph into different organs and tissues to create a living creature. Thanks to a remarkable little fish, and some very cleaver engineering at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, they now can watch in real time as an indistinguishable blob of cells gradually change into an embryonic zebra fish, one cell at a time. Until now, scientists could only observe this process by harvesting a living animal and examining each step as it moves through the embryonic stage. More
