2014 revisions to 2013 ASHI Standards — now open for public comment
The Quality Assurance and Standards Committee (QAS) has been working on updates to the 2013 ASHI Standards. There have been a variety of revisions recommended, but we wish to draw your particular attention to the following:
  • D.5.2.11 - "Laboratories Performing RFLP methods" has been deleted and in its place a new section on Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) has been added.
  • A number of new definitions pertaining to NGS have been added to the glossary.
  • D.5.3.8 - A new section on Virtual Crossmatching has been added.
  • All of the guidance sections now have reference numbers.
These proposed changes to the Standards have been submitted to the ASHI Board and the Accreditation Review Board (ARB) for review and comment. Now we seek your comments and suggestions.

Click here to view a redline version of the proposed 2014 Standards. Please carefully consider these proposed changes to the current standards and send your comments to Leslie Clark at ASHI Headquarters no later than Sept. 5.

Predictors of successful transplantation for severe combined immunodeficiency
2 Minute Medicine
SCID refers to a group of conditions in which both components of the body’s adaptive immune system — T-cells and B-cells — do not function properly. Since the source of these defective immune cells is defective stem cells in the bone marrow, the treatment for SCID is to transplant healthy stem cells into the patient. For this study, the authors reviewed over 200 cases of SCID treated over a 10-year period from 2000 to 2009. They looked for factors which were associated with better survival after transplantation.

New potential biomarker for alzheimer's discovered
Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News
Scientists from the Boston University School of Medicine say they have found variants in a new gene, PLXNA4, which may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The discovery of this novel genetic association may lead to new drug treatment options that target PLXNA4 specifically, according to the researchers whose findings appear in the Annals of Neurology.

Endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase 1 function and its pathogenic role in regulating innate and adaptive immunity in cancer and major histocompatibility complex class I-associated autoimmune diseases
Tissue Antigens (subscription required)
Major histocompatibility complex class I molecules present antigenic peptides on the cell surface to alert natural killer cells and CD8+ T-cells for the presence of abnormal intracellular events, such as virus infection or malignant transformation. The generation of antigenic peptides is a multistep process that ends with the trimming of N-terminal extensions in the endoplasmic reticulum by aminopeptidases ERAP1 and ERAP2.
