Although 2012 promises some design treats — from a new London bus to a lounge for United Nations delegates — the design agenda is dominated by complex long-term issues. There have been few moments in history when design has faced so many challenges and opportunities, and even fewer instances when the rest of the world has been so amenable to allowing designers to tackle them. How can designers translate scientific advances into things that can make life easier and more enjoyable? And how will designers respond to future breakthroughs made by the scientists? More

ABI continues positive momentum

Continuing the positive momentum of an encouraging boost in October, the Architecture Billings Index has reached its first positive mark since August. The American Institute of Architects reported the November ABI score was 52.0, following a score of 49.4 in October. This score reflects an overall increase in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 65.0, up dramatically from a reading of 57.3 the previous month. More

A planned 6.2 percent cut in federal spending on construction and infrastructure will worsen an already grim construction employment outlook for 2012. The fiscal year 2012 federal construction budget will be 18 percent smaller than the same budget for 2010. Many of the federal construction cuts were included in the recently passed omnibus appropriations bill. More
