Floor trends of the future
The Independent    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Two hot topics or key trends in the world of flooring are "sustainability in flooring" and "fashion meets carpet." The organizers of Domotex 2011, which will take place in Hannover, Germany next week, predict that in 2011/2012 carpets will double as design items and play a more pronounced role in interior decoration considerations. Carpets are beginning to incorporate modern and edgy colors, 3D looks and unique materials, and classic styles of carpet are getting an updated, more modern look. More

Can airports be fun?
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An airport doesn't need to feel like a boutique hotel, but it shouldn't feel like a refugee camp, either. A newly renovated international terminal at San Francisco International Airport by Gensler Architects is opening this spring and its design aims high in trying to re-set the expectations of a weary (and wary) flying public. Dressing room lighting affects buying decisions
InformeDesign    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Consumers often make final clothing evaluations and purchase decisions in retail dressing rooms. While previous studies have evaluated the effects of lighting in other areas of a retail store environment, little research exists on the dressing room area and the use of lighting in particular. Such a study, recently published in the Journal of Interior Design, concludes that dressing rooms preferably should be designed with occupant-controlled flexible lighting to adapt to varying shopper preferences. When this is not possible, install frontal lighting instead of overhead lighting to make the space feel more spacious and to reduce glare and shadowing. More

Designing spaces for today's students
College Planning & Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Since the late 1980s, college administrators and architects who design higher-education facilities have trained their sights on creating learning environments that support greater student engagement and enhance student collaboration. But only recently has the impetus to extend such learning environments beyond the classroom and into service, study and social spaces throughout buildings on campus taken hold. More

Encouraging walking in senior living facilities
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A study that investigated environmental factors both inside and around assisted living facilities that support walking by older individuals found that walking outdoors is supported by looped walking paths, paths that are wide enough to accommodate two people with walkers, shade, seating and visibility from inside by staff members. Indoor walking, which is desirable in inclement weather, is promoted by handrails along looped paths, seating, and views from windows that make walking interesting. More

Furniture standards change as office hierarchies flatten
FacilitiesNet    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It wasn't so long ago that standards for office furniture were inevitably based on company hierarchy. Today, a new model has emerged, one that has all employees—from top management down to the interns—using the same size and type of cubicle and furniture. Most companies today fall in between those two extremes. The question is, how many standards should a company have? More

Amazing LED eco wool carpet lights the way
Inhabitat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Eco and health friendly wool carpet just came along with an amazing and electric new twist—embedded LED lights. The carpets and rugs are made from 100 percent wool felt strips that are formed around eye-like forms, like knots in wood. Some of these knots are replaced with LED lights and oriented with the direction of the strips. The carpets can be created to form a directional path with the LEDs, or the lights can just be placed randomly for a glittering array. More
