Parsons interior design students were asked to create designs for a 7,745-square-foot ground-floor satellite chemotherapy delivery site in downtown Brooklyn that would provide treatment to patients closer to their homes in a more streamlined manner, which reduces waiting times by separating ancillary services like blood work and x-rays from the standard treatment experience. The goal for Parsons was to challenge the roles that interior designers can play in contemporary society by shaping the physical, emotional, and psychological experience for patients in ways that empower them. Housing permits and starts improve

After three consecutive months of declines, housing permits, starts, and overall completions saw modest improvements in November 2009, according to the latest "New Residential Construction Report" released by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Permits for single-family units increased 5.3 percent in November, starts 2.1 percent and completions 8.7 percent. More

Architects cut and cutting

Architects have been especially hit hard by the recession. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of employed architects slumped to 189,999 last year from 230,000 in 2008, a 17.8 percent decline—one of the steepest among all professions. (Figures on interior designers are not available yet.) Architects are experiencing fierce competition and having to resort to cost-cutting to satisfy discount-seeking clients. More
