Architectural barriers in schools a matter of perspective
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An extensive study of in-school architectural elements that are perceived to alter the scholastic experiences of children in 4th through 12th grade with biophysical impairments (e.g., muscular dystrophy, arthritis, blindness) found administrators and teachers focus on different barriers than do the students. Principals reported the highest number of barriers for the entranceway, signage/safety and water fountains. Special education resource teachers reported more barriers than the other two groups for ramps, washrooms, elevators and stairs. Students reported the highest number of barriers for doors, classrooms, library and recreational facilities. More

Dentist office with residential feel delights the eye and soothes the nerves
Chicago Now    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Classic, neutral colors, materials, walls and furniture that look more like a den at the doctor's house than a waiting room help make a dentist's office feel more like home. Psychologically, that's pretty simple: If it's not too antiseptic or too much like a "gate" at an airport, that root canal won't seem as scary. More

55+ housing expected to increase as boomers reach retirement age
Senior Housing News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The number of those households seeking housing better suited to their changing needs will rise dramatically, according to a new joint study from NAHB and the MetLife Mature Market Institute. NAHB predicts that 54,000 housing starts are projected in 55+ communities this year, a 30 percent rise from estimated 2010 levels, and that number is expected to increase another 46 percent to roughly 79,000 housing units in 2012 as a result of the aging of the Baby Boom generation, the first of whom turn 65 this year. Tech-drunk convention halls need a people-centered overhaul
Metropolis Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Writing about her experience at Greenbuild within the "state-of-the-art" addition to Chicago's McCormick Place, Metropolis editor Susan Szenasy observes: "This luminous modern structure was ideal for every function cited in the promotional materials. But not for the people who congregated in the halls (the wayfinding was convoluted), food-service areas (unhealthy calories consumed in crowded rooms), and meeting spaces (a gray, sleep-inducing pall fell over everything). . . . all told me that the user, once again, was left out of the design solution." Offices shrink as more workers go mobile
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
As employees become more mobile and less tied to their desks, the average amount of space per employee nationwide, in all industries, has dropped to 250 square feet from 400 square feet in 1985, according to Jones Lang LaSalle, a commercial brokerage and property manager. Within 10 years, that is expected to drop further, to 150 square feet. By allotting less space per person, companies can squeeze more employees—sometimes double or triple as many—onto a floor. One newly redesigned floor of Intel's campus can now accommodate 1,000 people, up from 600. More

Architect Adam Kushner revamps New York City penthouse using recycled subway parts
Inhabitat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Inspired by his love of New York City, architect Adam Kushner transformed this West Village, N.Y., apartment into a stunning space highlighted by a collection of repurposed parts. Salvaging pieces from the city's subways, as well as cutting boards from local delis, Kushner was able to beautifully (and inexpensively) revamp this penthouse into a destination teeming with character. The project is not only impressive in its use of recycled materials, but has also been immaculately executed, becoming a source of inspiration. More

A perfect storm for healthcare design innovation
Healthcare Design Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The current debate within Congress over healthcare reform reminds us that this is an industry that teeters between economics and service. On the design side, a tension is emerging between maintaining the "hospitality" look, feel and service of healthcare environments, while at the same time moving toward Lean and a more efficient operational model. This tension challenges us to look to other sources for innovative ideas that will evolve into solutions to improve both built environments and the delivery of patient care. More

Contemplating the ethics of preservation
The Design Observer Group    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In projects and writings, Jorge Otero-Pailos has become the provocateur of the field, posing fundamental questions—if not outright, then by the nature of his work—that embattled preservationists and conservationists have perhaps been too busy, or too unwilling, to ask. Why do we preserve buildings? What do we preserve? What is our cultural heritage? If preservationists are restoring objects that have already been made, is the field still a creative discipline?
