Color trends in healthcare design and designing for the future
Healthcare Design Magazine    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We've all seen drab health care facilities that are cold, unpleasant, and outdated. I walk through a hospital every day with salmon-colored walls and then through a lobby that's filled with forest green and looks like an interior photo from the early 1990s. As designers, how can we prevent this outdated affect from happening to our designs in the future and be friendlier to the facility's wallet? Hospitals and other health care facilities are big, complex businesses and it can be a struggle for many to make ends meet for day-to-day operations, let alone renovations. And patients enter a health care environment with a huge brick of anxiety on their back as it is—walking into an uncomfortable environment doesn't make that any better. What are some solutions to these problems? More

Experts debate sustainability at economic summit
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While most designers would agree that sustainability is important, they’re very likely to disagree about everything else to do with it. What exactly is sustainable design? What constitutes success? And failure? On what criteria? Those questions were put to a panel of design experts at the World Economic Summit in Davos, Switzerland last week. More

Universal design more attractive to 65+ than to boomers
Nation's Building News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
According to new research on the 55+ housing market released at last month’s International Builders' Show in Las Vegas, the 55-to-64 age cohort of home buyers showed more interest in technology-driven features, while the 65+ group expressed a strong preference for a variety of universal design features and a single-story floor plan or one with a first-floor master bedroom. The study found that in other ways the two cohorts share similar preferences, especially for services and amenities that support an easyliving lifestyle. More

Is loud the new black in restaurant design?
Contract Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Recently, Contract magazine held its annual Interiors Awards dinner at Abe & Arthur's, a new hip restaurant in the meat packing district of Manhattan. And while the food was great, and the interior design exceptionally swank, the landslide complaint was the noise. Get ready everyone: noise is the new black. Many upscale restaurants are now playing with acoustics (high ceilings, hardwood floors, exposed beams, open kitchens, etc.) and incorporating a dose of din into building design. Even luxury, five-star dining establishments are doing away with traditional table cloths, soft carpeting, and curtains to let the sound reverberate more freely. More

Wallpaper making a comeback with innovative materials
Florida Weekly    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
After losing favor to the whirl of faux paints, glazes and stencils, wallpaper has found its way back in the world of residential decor. Today's model homes feature more wallpaper than in previous years. Advances in appearance and application have elevated the use of wallpaper to new heights. Crushed crystal, sand and glass beads are among today’s imbedded materials. Surfaces are raised and dipped, some feeling as though they have crevices. More
