Positive benefits of workstation-specific lighting
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A study by the National Research Council of Canada on the effects of office lighting on employee and organizational well being found that workstation-specific lighting with individual (personal) control was preferred over parabolic-louvered luminaires regardless of the surface reflectances of the furnishings. In addition, several small, but statistically significant, effects were found: "Pleasure, room attractiveness and illumination, lighting satisfaction, overall environmental satisfaction, job satisfaction and organizational commitment were all higher for the people in offices with workstation-specific luminaires. The frequency and intensity of physical symptoms and the intent to turnover were all lower for the people in offices with workstation-specific luminaires." More

Life inside a Katrina Cottage
Architectural Record    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The yellow-framed Katrina Cottage prototype, designed by New York architect Marianne Cusato, became something of a media sensation for its tight design, economical construction and portability via flatbed truck. Further, it had the potential to live on when no longer needed as emergency housing. But for various reasons, the little houses never caught on. Though thousands of visitors toured Cusato's original when it was on display, nobody ever actually "test drove" it to see whether its 308 square feet of space was actually livable—until Ben Brown, a former reporter, moved in for three months last fall.
