Keeping Up with Change in Healthcare
Healthcare Design
Healthcare providers and the teams that design their spaces need to keep changing and adapting in order to survive. While in the past, healthcare operated under a build-it-and-they-will-come-type philosophy, today's marketplace calls for new ambulatory care strategies, a laser-sharp focus on patients' wants and needs, and the ability to identify the best model, location, and service offering for the community you're serving.

The Daltile Interior Design Scholarship Is Now Open
ASID Foundation
Now more than ever, interior design professionals are seeking opportunities to use their talents for the greater good by supporting local and global communities in need. Such efforts improve lives while raising awareness about how interior design can impact the well-being of those in need and create positive social change. And now you can, too.

This year's challenge for the Daltile Interior Design Scholarship, presented by the ASID Foundation, is to select a charity or non-profit to take on as a pro-bono client and explore the current design issues your client faces within the current space, and determine how to transform it into a high-functioning, beautiful environment. The goal is to create a redesign of your client's current space that addresses the needs of its users while exhibiting design excellence and creativity. To learn more, visit daltiledesign.com.

Time was that life stage milestones caused homeowners to buy a new house, but that's not always the case anymore. Moving up is no longer the game. That's especially true of the next wave of young homebuyers and aging boomers — the two sweet spots of home sales for the next 20 years, at least. The solution is to design homes that respond well and remain useful in the face of various and dramatic life stage and lifestyle changes over time, not just until the next milestone.

Value of Major Remodel Slips as Home Prices Soften
Michael J. Berens
The cost of undertaking a major remodeling project increased last year, but the added value of those projects declined. That finding, from Remodeling magazine's 2015 Cost vs. Value Report, reflects a substantial drop in the overall rise of home prices last year (from 10.8 percent in 2013 to 4.8 percent in 2014). With the growth in prices expected to slow even further this year, homeowners looking to sell may begin to have second thoughts about undertaking high-priced projects for which they will get a poor return on their investment.

Why Our Brains Love High Ceilings
Fast Company's Co.Design
Part of the appeal of high ceilings is no doubt related to a general preference for space, but the behavioral and brain evidence suggests there's more to it than that. Some research from a few years back ties high ceilings to a psychological sense of freedom. And new neuroimaging work shows that a tall room triggers our tendencies toward spatial exploration.

Are You Trying to 'Stealth Design' Your New Client?

A DYI designer is the interior designer who wants to do it all himself or herself — the designer who's reluctant to bring on staff because she's afraid of losing control, or he believes he has the skills to do it all alone. It may sound contradictory, but if you're a DIY designer, you're missing out on the opportunity to maximize your potential by devoting more of your time to your best self.

The Sustainable Carpet Buying Guide
Sourceable
Despite their soft and cozy feeling under our feet, carpets can have a range of environmental and health impacts, just like any other product. In fact, they can have considerably different criteria when it comes to assessing their environmental or health impacts compared to other types of flooring materials. As with other flooring, their composition and methods of manufacture need to be taken into consideration. However, the answers to questions such as "synthetic or natural fibers?" or "what chemical treatments have been used?" aren’t necessarily as clear-cut as they might appear.
