Remodeling Market Index reaches 4-year high
Nation's Building News    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A good indication that the remodeling market is heading into a recovery, the NAHB Remodeling Market Index (RMI) for this year's first quarter rose to 46.5, up from 41.5 in the fourth quarter of 2010 and its highest level since the fourth quarter of 2006. "Remodelers report a jump in activity so far this year and have been receiving more calls for work and appointments," said NAHB Remodelers Chairman Bob Peterson. "However, many home owners are still slow to commit to remodeling because they feel uncertain about the economic recovery and the difficulty in obtaining loans." More

Secret lairs exposed! Disappointingly bland
Design Observer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Bin Laden compound makes an interesting contrast with the secret modern lairs created for the movies, such as those for Bond villains by the legendary production designer Ken Adam. The same can be said for the command center from which he was dispatched. Photographs of the White House "Situation Room" show the president and his security team jammed uncomfortably into a small room with dark wainscotting and unflattering light. By any stretch, it is a far cry from the war room Adam created for Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove. More

Taking patient privacy to the next level
Medical Office Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a medical office setting, it's important to exceed expectations when it comes to patient privacy because merely following health care regulations may not be enough to protect a patients' privacy completely. In an era where identity theft is a real threat, privacy is more important than ever, so going above and beyond the expected to ensure patient privacy can set one practice apart from others. Violating patients’ basic sense of privacy through a flawed or outdated medical office design can seriously damage their opinion of a practice. When working with clients, point out to them what you can do through design to add layers of privacy to their practice. More

Luxury market droops as economy sputters
Residential Design + Build    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Luxury consumption surged in the first quarter of 2011. Tempering luxury marketer's enthusiasm for the return of the luxury consumer market, however, is the fact that spending on luxury by the affluent consumers surveyed was basically flat from previous quarter. The rate of change in luxury consumers' spending peaked between the second and third quarter 2009. Since then the rate of change has steadily slowed, which indicates that much of the pent up demand for luxury goods that built during the worst of the recession has already been released. Spending on luxury is likely to flatten out over the coming quarters unless there is dramatic improvement in the economy overall, which seems doubtful. More

Inhabitat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Beijing-based design firm FCJC used a limited pallet of bamboo to transform an ordinary space into a stunning contemporary restaurant. The interior of the Tang Palace is enclosed by a flowing grid of bamboo strands that bring the nine meter-tall room down to human scale and conceal the private dining rooms hung above. Structural elements like concrete column and block walls are made light by the parametric lattice, which was gently sourced and fastidiously erected. More
