Simple Changes May Help Homes Better Survive Tornadoes

Researchers who studied the aftermath of a devastating 2013 tornado in Oklahoma say simple design changes could improve the survivability of wood-frame structures such as residential homes during tornadoes. As part of a 138-page report on their findings, the researchers recommended tornado-prone areas adopt more robust hurricane design standards similar to those used by coastal regions to help homes survive and the additional use of safe rooms or storm shelters to help inhabitants survive.

Builder Confidence in 55+ Housing Market Sets New High

Builder confidence in the 55+ single-family housing market recently reached the highest first-quarter level it has ever seen during the first quarter of 2014, according to the National Association of Home Builders' latest 55+ Housing Market Index. When compared to the first quarter of 2013, the single-family HMI increased 4 points to a level of 50, which NAHB notes is the highest first-quarter reading since the inception of the index in 2008.

April Architecture Billings: Still in the Red

Home Remodeling Trumps Moving, According to Houzz Survey

With the exception of millennials, the majority of U.S. homeowners (66 percent) who are remodeling plan to stay in their home for the long term, according to the third annual Houzz & Home survey. The survey also found that 53 percent of U.S. homeowners say they are remodeling to increase the resale value of their home but have no plans to move in the next five years, and just 16 percent plan to sell their home in the next two years.

Comparable Satisfaction: LEED and Non-LEED Offices

Research published in the journal Building and Environment continues to show that users of LEED buildings are not necessarily more satisfied with their workplaces than are individuals working in non-LEED structures. Previous work by the research team has shown that "when evaluated comprehensively, there is not a practically significant influence of LEED certification on occupant satisfaction." The new study suggests that "the positive value of LEED certification from the point of view of occupant satisfaction may tend to decrease with time."
