Making the case for carpet in healthcare settings

As the healthcare industry continues to face increasing numbers of patients and a decreasing population of caregivers, healthcare flooring, such as carpet, is often selected to optimize for two conditions: maximum-underfoot comfort and/or minimum-rolling resistance to prevent lost-time injuries. Studies have shown that certain types of luxury vinyl tile, rubber flooring and linoleum flooring that claim to be "anti-fatigue" may not necessarily meet those criteria. Results of these studies further show that certain carpet products, which might not be thought to have useful cushioning, actually do. More

Cooper-Hewitt announces winners of eleventh annual national design awards

Cooper-Hewitt Director Bill Moggridge recently announced the winners and finalists of the 2010 National Design Awards, which recognize excellence across a variety of disciplines. The Award recipients will be honored at a gala dinner to be held during National Design Week in October. The award for interior design went to William Sofield. The jury stated "his holistic approach grounded on craft and materials creates highly original spaces that are compelling and welcoming." More

Funding program will help preserve Modernist icons

Two icons of Modernism—the Farnsworth House in Plano, Ill., and Philip Johnson's Glass House in New Canaan, Conn.—will be the beneficiaries of a newly launched funding initiative by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. "Modern Views: A Project to Benefit Farnsworth House and the Glass House" has a funding goal of $1 million, which will go to the restoration of the Brick House at the Glass House and to restoration, maintenance and operations at Farnsworth House. The January 2010 addition of Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House to the National Trust's portfolio of historic sites allows closer collaborative efforts between the two properties. More

Research predicts a substantial growth in green projects

Certified green building projects are on the rise and a future where sustainable residential developments are the norm may not be too far away. According to Bryan Jackson, a green and sustainable construction adjunct professor at the University of Southern California and the editor of Green Building Update, recent research predicts a 900 percent growth in certified green projects worldwide in the next 10 years. After waiting 30 years for a library, the town of Los Gatos, Calif., will get one that is state-of-the-art. The residents recently celebrated the groundbreaking for a new library that will serve as a community within the community, with special areas for children, teens, multimedia, and a reading room with a fireplace and comfy chairs. It will be integrated with a nearby garden area and park, which will be improved to include an accessible pathway around the perimeter. The town was striving for a LEED Gold building but now has hopes of exceeding that. More

The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) recently announced a new green building policy agenda that will be implemented nationwide. The mayors unanimously adopted resolutions to establish financing mechanisms for energy retrofits of existing buildings, greening of school districts, sustainable development in cities, green affordable housing, and adoption of green building codes. Architectural billings dip in May

Following three months of increases, the AIA Architectural Billings Index fell nearly three points in May. AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker said the decline likely reflects the unusual caution on the part of lending institutions to provide credit for construction projects that apparently would be successful in this economic environment. Legislation currently in Congress could provide some relief to the construction and design industry, if it passes. More
