Play To Your Prospect's Fantasies
ForResidentialPros.com
In his book, “The 48 Laws of Power,” Robert Greene writes: "To gain power, you must be the source of pleasure for those around you – and pleasure comes from playing to people's fantasies." How does this relate to the design industry? During the home consultation visit, experienced designers usually do a pretty good job of finding out what prospects want. However, skilled professionals will dig much deeper and find out why they want it. They know to listen carefully, because the prospect will reveal his or her Dominant Buying Motive (DBM).

Adding Bright Light
Research Design Connections
Newly published research indicates that exposure to bright light (5600 lux) is important for people leaving a space at night or in the early morning. This can be accomplished by cycling lights so that they are bright at the end of a work period, or brightly lighting areas people frequently visit before leaving a location, such as a locker room. Researchers have determined that "bright light at the end of a night shift may have potential as a countermeasure to improve driving performance, particularly for commutes that occur before dawn."

How to Lose Some of Your Upper Kitchen Cabinets
Houzz
We’ve been trained to think we need to fill every bit of wall space in the kitchen with cabinetry because that’s the way we’ve always done it. But many kitchen designers have been giving certain upper cabinets in the kitchen the side eye and letting them know their days are numbered. If you’re considering some upper cabinet removal, here is how to get by without them, and some compelling reasons to do it.

Walls May Hold the Secret to a Cozy Space
The Washington Post
Upholstering walls can create warmth. Kings and queens of Europe dating to the 14th century hung fabric — tapestries to be exact — not only for decorative display, but also to insulate their drafty castle rooms during the cold months, and to absorb sound. With some planning, you can achieve the same warming effect.

Hospitality Net
The third space describes a place where people congregate outside of the home (first space) and the office (second space). If you can engineer parts of a hotel – the lobby, the restaurant, the bar, the café, and so forth – as flourishing third spaces, it may lead to higher occupancy levels and hotel cachet.

Why Reality TV Might Be Killing Healthcare Design
Healthcare Design Magazine
The Center for Health Design has been working with organizations for years to advance the practice of healthcare design. But lately, I’ve been hearing more and more about how the process is broken: There’s no time. Everything has to be done faster, cheaper. I don’t think it’s just the economy or healthcare reform. As our use of technology has progressed, we now live in an instant world. It’s almost like reality TV has deadened our senses to the real work of design, especially in something as complex as healthcare. We’re pressured into easy answers, black and white, and there are fewer opportunities to understand where the real solution might be.

Future Education Design Strives to Give Children More Freedom in Their Learning
Interiors & Sources
Kids are curious, so the Kids Science Labs team believes learning should develop through exploration and experience, not explanation. The company’s Learning and Discovery Lab is a 7,900-square-foot, hands-on complex in Chicago's South Loop for children aged 2-12.
