ASID Foundation Announces
David Barrett Memorial Scholarship
Applications accepted now through Dec. 1

Awarding $12,000, the biennial David Barrett Memorial Scholarship recognizes an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student's work that demonstrates a continuing interest and ability in utilizing classical designs and traditional materials, inclusive of furniture and fabrics.

The scholarship is open to all full-time students in their junior or senior year of undergraduate or graduate study majoring in interior design at an accredited college or university. ASID members and nonmembers are encouraged to apply online.

Number of senior households to increase 35 percent by 2020

According to a recent Harvard University housing report, the baby boomers will boost the number of senior households to unprecedented heights. Although most baby boomers will want to age in place upon retirement, the study points to a report showing that more than 30 percent of household heads ages 65-74 said in 2007 they had moved in the previous 10 years, many into smaller units. If the older baby boomers match this mobility rate, some 3.8 million will downsize their homes during the coming decade, lifting the demand for smaller units, particularly in the suburbs where housing costs typically are lower than in urban centers. More

June marked the third consecutive decline in revenue at U.S. architecture firms as measured by the Architecture Billings Index. The American Institute of Architects reported the June ABI score was 46.3, almost a full point from a reading of 47.2 the previous month. This score reflects a continued decrease in demand for design services. However, the new projects inquiry index was 58.1, up sharply from a mark of 52.6 in May. More
