Firms on Interior Design magazine’s list of “Rising Giants” have experienced the largest hiring increase since the Great Recession. More than 2,800 designers are currently employed, as opposed to 2,400 a couple of years ago. Even better, firms anticipate expanding to 3,200. Why We Should Be Living in "Living" Houses
Metropolis
While other factors play a role, key elements of successful buildings (from the user’s point of view, not the architect’s) can be ascribed to biophilia. Judging exclusively by indicators of human health, and ignoring the fame of the architect and the media hype for certain fashions, we can identify buildings by both named and anonymous architects that offer the greatest sense of well-being for their users. The structure of those buildings triggers a healing process in our own bodies, so that we consequently wish to experience such buildings as often as possible.

Why Glass Matters in Sustainable Design
Architecture & Design
The basis and primary purpose of a building is liveability and amenity for humans, not just a low-energy-use box. A recent academic journal article implies that homes and workplaces cannot be energy efficient whilst also reaping the benefits of glass – light filled, comfortable, better quality spaces with an enhanced connection with nature. Perhaps the change that needs to occur lies in the hands of the designer, who must play a role in ensuring better building environments – designing more buildings, with more glass, that have exceptional energy efficiency performance.

Designing for the Health Care Consumer
Health Facilities Management
After years of cookie-cutter hospitals and clone-like clinics, the tide is changing in health care design. Constructors and designers are rethinking the entire hospital experience from the patient’s perspective and asking different questions than in the past. What is the patient’s journey from when they pull into the parking lot to when they leave it, and how long does it take? What is the first thing a patient sees when he or she enters the facility, and how is he or she treated as the process continues? How does the patient feel, not just physically, but emotionally?

Managing the Acoustics of Open, High-Performance Workplaces
FacilitiesNet
High-performance workplaces can be an ideal environment for employees, allowing easy collaboration and communication in shared spaces. But these attributes can also be an Achilles’ heel because the spaces are often open, giving workers less individual space, less privacy, and increased noise. Properly managing the acoustics of open spaces, however, can help by controlling the noise level and giving workers options for private conversations and group discussions.
