Using Smart Home Technologies: Who Will Rule the Roost?
Michael J. Berens

And, as with physics, that unity is proving most elusive.

A Rebirth for Wright's First Los Angeles Project
Architectural Record
When Frank Lloyd Wright built the Hollyhock House, he couldn't have imagined it would one day appear as the Piranha Temple in the 1989 movie Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death. Remodeling Index Posts Moderate Gains, But Forecast Firms
Metrostudy via Builder
Metrostudy, a Hanley Wood company, has released its second-quarter 2014 Residential Remodeling Index detailing activity in the remodeling and replacement industry. The index gained 4.3 percent in the second quarter, year-over-year, which follows a 6.5 percent year-over-year increase in the first quarter. A firming in housing fundamentals — faster job growth, more "non-distress" home sales and higher household formations — is expected to drive remodeling and replacement growth for many quarters ahead, with the market reaching full recovery nationally by third quarter 2015.

One thing that could be putting homeownership out of reach for young renters is a tight credit market, especially for graduates and young professionals starting their careers with significant debt.

Metropolis
For the past 20 years, A.J. Paron-Wildes's focus has been on dispelling the notion of "one size fits all" when it comes to office design. "A person may be able to tune out the background noise so they can focus, but their neighbor sitting next to them cannot," says Paron-Wildes, a regional architectural design manager for Allsteel. "I've been using the term 'design empathy'… to educate others on how our spaces need to accommodate a variety of sensory experiences." Metropolis spoke with Paron-Wildes about her work with Allsteel, how technology changes the way we interact with our workspaces and the newest trends in office design.
