2nd Quarter IDBI Shows Positive Momentum for the Design Industry

The ASID IDBI remains positive about the near term outlook for the interior design industry. The six month business conditions index score of 74 for June remains essentially unchanged from the March score of 73 and slightly better than December's score of 69.9. The consistency of these scores suggest ongoing, continued expansion for the design industry. Review the full report. A webinar to share the IDBI results with media was held on August 26 and included such publications as Architect, Interiors & Sources, and MMBQ.

The IDBI for July jumped 6.3 points to 63.4 marking the largest monthly gain since May 2014. The new project inquiries index was also up substantially, rising 5.1 points in July to 63.4. Improvement was also evident across the nation with July IDBI scores above or near 60 in all four regions.

Millennials Squeezed Out of Housing Market

This was supposed to be the year millennials threw off their chains of dependence and flocked to the housing market. Instead, more millennials are now living with their families than at the height of the Great Recession according to a new study from the Pew Research Center. It's not that millennials don't want to be independent. Many simply cannot afford to live on their own, in part because the cost of housing is so high.

Single-Family Gains Push Housing Starts to Highest Level Since 2007

Led by a strong jump in single-family production, nationwide housing starts inched up 0.2 percent in July, according to newly released data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Commerce Department. This is the highest level since October 2007. “Our builders are reporting more confidence in the market, and are stepping up production of single-family homes as a result,” said NAHB Chairman Tom Woods.
