Seat of power: A neutral tone is set for the Oval Office's new look
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
While the Obamas were bicycling and book-buying recently in Martha's Vineyard, they were having some work done back home. A redecorated Oval Office—with cushy sofas, striped wallpaper and a beige palette—was revealed to the press, just before its national debut as backdrop to the president's address to the nation on Iraq. The Kansas City Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Updating the master bath in the last three decades has involved much more than selecting fixtures. Today, environmental, sociological and economic factors are also influencing the design of products for the bath. At the spring Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Chicago, water conservation and universal design were front and center, as much as great style, value, the high-tech and the edgy. More

Accessibility watch: Retrofitting
Metropolis Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new trend is emerging as the baby boom grows older. Some homes and communities are designed to allow residents to age-in-place, or for young people to begin their lives in a house that can, eventually, be adapted as their mobility and accessibility needs change over time. These forward-thinking models provide an excellent vision for the future of housing. They can also serve as inspiration for improvements in consumer goods and the design of spaces, beginning today. The office, minimaximized
The Boston Globe    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many companies are moving employees into open spaces with fewer private offices, lower cubicle walls, and in some cases, smaller work stations. With laptops and BlackBerrys allowing work to be done from anywhere, information being stored digitally instead of on stacks of paper, more work being outsourced, and all the layoffs in the past year or two, companies are shrinking their footprints. And they’re saving money on real estate and utility costs in the process. Plus, employees like the open space design and find they are more productive. More

No job too small for today's designers
The Baltimore Sun    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What businesses and independent professionals do to stay successful in a tough economy says a lot about them. Most of the interior designers are remaining busy but are typically doing more smaller projects as opposed to just a few large ones—the 80/20 rule reversed. Now that large-scale projects are in shorter supply, designers are taking jobs that just a few years ago they didn't have time to consider. More

Builders seek new work in older homes
Builder Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Dismal market conditions have prompted many builders and trade contractors who previously specialized in new construction to explore alternative lines of work. Some are hoping to add a few new skills that will open doors to building restoration projects. While much of the building industry remains stagnant, demand for preservation expertise is growing. And as time goes on and more buildings become designated as historic structures, demand for these skills will only increase. More
